Thousands of fortresses splay on the vast expanses of waterless steppes and, like gigantic idols, they keep the secrets of Ancient Khorezm.
Khorezm is interesting not only for the numerous ruins of the fortresses of the ancient and early medieval period. It can rightfully be considered the birthplace of one of the oldest religions in the world - Zoroastrianism.
Researchers of the Avesta, the holy book of Zoroastrians, believe that it was the territory of Greater Khorezm (this included the territories of Khorezm, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan right up to northern Iran) that was the hearth of this ancient religion.
There is a disagreement over where exactly in the territory of Big Khorezm the Avesta was written, but most scholars believe that this is undoubtedly modern Khorezm.
